You then combine those passions into a personal vision. Being a fusioneer requires following your heart and pursuing what lights a fire within you. Artist and engineer Paul Kirby guides you through his proprietary FUSE method: Find your passions, Upgrade your skills, Start fusing, and continually Evolve.
He illustrates key principles using examples from his own journey creating Dulcinea, a highly specialized robot that paints art, and stories of famous innovators like Hedy Lamarr. You will assess your interests and uncover your core purpose through introspective, self-exploratory exercises, then craft a personalized vision and learn how to execute it.

Meet The Original Fusioneer
Paul Kirby
Although he was not aware of it, Paul has been living the FUSE model since 1977. While earning an electrical engineering degree at UC Berkeley, he applied for and was accepted into their ROTC program. Upon graduating in 1972, he was commissioned an officer in the US Air Force and served four years during the later part of the Vietnam War. While working in an Air Force research lab he was awarded two commendation medals.
After taking a self-assessment test in his second year of the MBA program at the Harvard Business School, he scored high in theoretical, which was not a surprise, but he also scored high in esthetic, which was a surprise. The other attributes were clustered much lower. Puzzling with what to do with this assessment and a future career path, and while walking on a footbridge across the Charles River on the evening of October 23, 1977, he was struck with the idea to combine technology and art and build a robot that paints. That was the first of three profound moments for him.
During the weekends of 1980–1981, Paul built his first painting robot while working in product marketing at a division of Hewlett-Packard. He later went on to have a successful career in venture capital. After retiring, and wondering what to do, he experienced his second profound moment in 1994. While on a skiing trip in Europe, he visited a Leonardo da Vinci museum exhibit. Walking out, and overwhelmed with what he had seen, he knew at that moment it was time to pursue his original dream—the fusion of art and science.
Paul then spent the next twenty-five years on his fusioneering journey, happily building his robot, Dulcinea, and together creating many paintings. Unknowingly, the third profound “moment” was about to occur. He was overwhelmed with the intensity and excitement exhibited by gifted fourth and fifth graders and at-risk high school kids visiting his studio. He realized he had been given many gifts and that he had a deep responsibility to give back, to share what he’d done, and to excite and inspire others to pursue their own dreams. An outgrowth of that was the formulation of this FUSE framework—one he had lived—and this book. He hopes you too are inspired to find your pathway and lead a rich and fulfilling life as you were meant to.
